Chuck and I were talking on the phone this evening when my son comes running in yelling, "get off the phone, there's a bear after the horses."
Had to get off with Chuck and go out and see what was going on.
Well, apparently, a big black bear, about 300 pounds or so had come over to my next door neighbors deer feeding station and chased off the fawns, (we have one doe who has 3 fawns this year) My neighbor pumped up his pellet gun a bunch and popped old bear in the butt. The bear just turned around and looked at him and then noticed my horses in the pasture. The bear started stalking the horses, they ran to the corral and my neighbor jumped in his pickup and ran over and told my son that the bear was headed to the corral. That was when the boy (I say boy, but he will be 33 this September) came running in and grabbed my 30-06 and went out after the bear... It took off towards the back of our property with my boy hot on his tail. The bear turned and looked at the boy and he fired a shot between it's legs. The bear then turned and ran across my property and headed for the river.
We get them all the time this time of year.... I think it is because all of the little streams are drying up and my neighbor has a water trough for the deer and I have one for the horses and another for my dogs. I really don't think a bear would attack a couple horses as long as it wasn't starving. However, you can't tell the horses that, because they just know that all big meat eaters are out to get them... Wall the eyes and run like the devil......
