Here's my dilemma.............I bought this horn as a "second horn" for my Eastern impression, while waiting for a story horn that a well known horn maker was making for me. For some reason a year later I still haven't received my story horn or any further communication. As you can see from the photos there is already a bit of scrimshaw "His Horn" and all I want is to try and have "Wm.Bennett" and possibly "Mar. 25 1754". I just need to find someone competent enough to finish the scrim work, copying the original style of lettering..........and no I can't do it. I am already out $500 dollars attempting to get a story horn done by two different makers. If anyone knows someone honest and competent to do just a little scrimshaw work........let me know.

Doug, Next time you come up, bring it with you... I can knock it out in less than a half hour.

Doug I've known Lloyd a long time. I'm sure he could do the job. If you live close enough it would be the quick easy way to solve the problem. Steve

Lloyd thanks....I'll be up when it slows down a bit here at the lodge! I am soooo bummed about my efforts to get my story horn made. My experience with dealing with artisans and such is very discouraging.

Lloyd Thanks but after several hundred dollars wasted on the effort I have no more money for scrimmed horns............and I am starting to run out of steam for living history!

Doug I agree with Lloyd's opinion of Steve Vance. He's top drawer. Sorry about your experiences with artisans. Hope you don't paint us all with the same brush. Steve

Cody ...........I have no idea.......this was originally for my 18th Century impression.............I have another plain horn I made a 100 years ago for 19th century. Pillow/mattress ticking has been around for a long time but as soon as I say yes......it "was around".......someone will politely tell us I'm wrong! .............my son James' middle name is Cody and he married a Codi........Buffalo Bill would be proud! Here's a "word origin" on ticking. "cloth covering for mattresses or pillows," 1640s, from tyke (modern tick) with the same meaning (mid-14c.), probably from M.Du. tike. Now as to specific design/color/ stripping/ but ticking appears to more specifically type and use of a heavy material, linen/cotton. Finally I put ticking as a backing to the wampum because of it's common use among modern makers of "period" articles and because I like it! ........and in a pinch I could pull it off for rifle bullet patching!........far more information with little or no result than you probably wanted!

Thanks Pathfinder as far as I know for sure the patern of ticking as we know it was at least around during the Civil War bacause the Louisiana Tigers (name sake of the LSU footbal team ) wore pilow ticking pants kind of puffed out like Zouaves .I like pilow ticking but like you said sure as I make something somebody will say something about it ,but cant satisfy everybody I reconed
