I can't find pork brains anywhere, not even the local slaughter houses. Anyone know of a source? Guess I will start harvesting all the deer brains but that doesn't help with the hides I'm working on now. TC

I guess I'll go ahead and use eggs for these 4 hides and I will definitely save the brains from all deer from now on.

Do you find a difference in using eggs rather than brains, besides the fact it sorta discolors the hide? I've only used eggs so I don't have anything to compare it with.

You can actually find both pig and cow brains on Amazon from time to time.

You can also use Fels-Naptha soap. Grate the bar of soap then dissolve and soak in a tub just like you would with brains, then smoke and most folks could not tell the difference. I've heard you could also use Murphy's soap and skip the grating part. I haven't used it but makes sense. I have hides I did with both Fels-Naptha and Tide detergent and been fine for 35 years. Yep, I keep and freeze all my deer brains now. Good luck. I also, buy most of my hides now. Can't shoot enough deer to keep up.

Matt, I've only used the eggs once and it didn't turn out well as I wrote in my blog. Don't think it was the fault of the eggs but rather my failure to get all the grain off. Plus, maybe too long soaking in the wood ash/water. Anyway, I'm going back to dry scraping in a frame like I used to do yars ago.
Leifer, I looked on Amazon and they were out. I'll keep checking back there.
Doug, thanks for the info. I'll try that as well. I still have 3 hides in the freezer that I need to try and get done before deer season starts in a month. Since I retired I am busier than I've ever been in my whole life.

Doug, where do you buy your hides?

Mostly from Oliver McCloskey. I have bought Brain Tanned Moose from Sylvain Ouellet in Canada. And a few others as they pop up now and then. Each vendor has their own style and finished product. I used to get hides from a Cree collective in BC but dang, they are just too nice. Almost like like velvet. Most hides from Canada are like that. Doug T.
