I've been looking at this rifle at TVM for a while and am thinking of getting one. What's everyone's opinion on this one, quality and authenticity wise. It's the "Western Fur Trade" rifle at this link here. www.tennesseevalleymuzzleloading.comJon

Jon, I'm no great authority on rifles but it's a nice looking piece.

Yeah I thought it was a nice looking rifle as well. I had talked to Larry Walker a while back about one of his JJ Henry rifles in a Lancaster pattern but due to being stretched thin with orders and some other issues, he was unable to take on any more. He recommended these guys. Really thinking 'bout "pulling the trigger" on one.

I am not an expert either, but the lock panels on that rifle look way to big to me,if you order the rifle have them work the panels down to a smaller profile, before you pull the trigger on that rifle maybe have a conversation with Mike Morain mmorain@frontiernet.net he built a rifle for a member on here and the pictures of the rifle looked pretty good to me.Mike's phone # is 406-293-8239

Hey Jon, I don't have any personal experience with TVA but they have a pretty good reputation. As for that particular rifle, like TVA states, it isn't a replica of any particular trade rifle but looks like a fair representation of the type. Looks to have a LOT of the Henry English Pattern in it which I've always admired since Ron Paull used to make them back in the '80s. As for the lock panels looking a little big I agree with Duane, but the Henry trade rifles inn particular seemed to exibit that characteristic. Definitely look in to other options like Duane suggested but this one sure looks like it would be a good generic trade rifle at a decent price. Keep us posted on your quest. Max

Thanks for your thoughts on it Max. I'm trying to be historically accurate with the little knowledge that that I have on the subject so I value your input greatly. I will definitely look at other options too though. I would hate to spend that kind of money and be disappointed later. I want to apologize to everyone for my ignorance. I thought later I should have posted this under the rifle section of the forum but failed to do so. I would ask to have it moved but since the passing of Chuck, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Seems to me you're asking the right questions Jon. BTW, if you want to start studying western fur trade era trade rifles , The Trade Rifle Sketch Book by Charles Hanson is kind of a quick start guide onj the subject. Also, the fur company manifests, some of which are available on this forum, really shed some interesting light on the subject.
