I'm hoping to do some beaver trapping later this coming winter. I haven't trapped in 25 years or more. I was needing a good period polled belt axe. I have a Norlund hatchet that I bought new back in the mid 70's and have always carried in my pickup. It had a modern curved 12 inch hickory haft. I took the old haft out, filed off the Norlund name and dressed the poll and the blade edge, applied a gray-brown patina and made a straight 15 inch haft out of a piece of hickory maul handle. I dyed the haft and finished with my linseed oil and beeswax gunstock finish. This is how it turned out.

Very nice Creek. Looks like it should serve you well. I'm also hoping to get some traps out this year. Let us know how it goes.

That looks nice TurkeyCreek. I just picked up a medium camp hawk from H&B Forge. Haven't had chance to use it yet but I like the looks and workmanship. I have a small hatchet with a head that my brother and I found while metal detecting at a colonial period site in VA many years ago. We ran it through electrolysis and cleaned it up, sharpened it, and put it on a hickory handle. I recently used it to cut some chokecherry for snowshoes, but it probably has earned a retirement spot of honor with my other relics. The maker would sure be surprised to see it in use here hundreds of years later! John

Thanks for the compliment Ma John. As for using your original, I'm of the mindset that the old guns and such were made to be used as long as they are not museum pieces and are not mistreated. In the near future I hope to post some videos of me shooting original muzzle loaders on my YouTube channel. Light use won't hurt your hatchet. Just my opinion. TC

I hear you on that TurkeyCreek, my brother agrees and thinks I should keep using the little hatchet. I'll use it for lighter duty stuff. There is a separation in the steel in the back that concerns me for hard pounding. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a pic later.
