Hello Camp! My name is Rob Shilling. I am not new to historical reenactment / portayals having been a member of the Jefferson County Longrifles (PA) for a number of years, a member of Compagnie LeBoeuf for French and Indian War reenactment, and also a member of the American Longrifles Association (#243). While I have mainly focused my interests to eastern stuff, being from Pennsylvania and all; I am interested in starting to do western fur trade / mountain man stuff. I have always believed in "doing" the history of what is your backyard. In 2014, I moved to eastern Nevada when my wife became a BLM employee. A month ago, she transferred to Miles City, Montana. I have started to delve into some of the early history of the area here (Lewis & Clark, Manuel Lisa) online and know that Fort Union is the closest fort site to me. Any suggestions for books and stuff for me to read would be appreciated. Looking forward to learning more from folks on this board and around the area.

Howdy Rob. You're going to absolutely love it out here in the Rocky Mountain West (yes, that includes Miles City!) and the Rocky Mountain fur trade! Just get ready for a little different winter than you're used to. We lived for quite a few years in Buffalo Wyoming which, in western terms, isn't that far from Miles City. We are constantly talking about moving back up there. It's grand country my friend. Welcome to this fire and welcome to the west. Turkey Creek

Howdy Rob - I am both in the ALRA #25 and the AMM #2085 and you are in an awesome area - Miles City is not too far from the Missouri/Yellowstone/Little Missouri - that country around Marmarth ND is pretty rugged and a good place to trek/horseback trek
There are Lots of books in the area of Interest Chardon's Journal at Ft Clark 1834-39 is pretty good - Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri by Larpenteur - After Lewis and Clark by Utley and the Journal of Patrick Gass are all good places to start
