It's been many years since I had a muzzleloading cap gun. Lloyd Moler started talking about leaving colonial era and going back to his fur trade roots, and it got me thinking along the same lines. But I wanted to avoid doing typical "free trapper" as I was more likely to do in my youth....which is what I did. Still have my GRRW flintlock Leman and Northwest Gun, both of which I built from kits back in the late 70's. But I decided to do something different. Debating between an adventurer (Stewart/Maximilian) or "Col. Henry Dodge" I decided since I already had most of the gear, I'd go for the Dodge impression. Going off the famous George Catlin painting of "Col. Henry Dodge 1834" I have top hat and leather coat. My sword is different than the photo.....photo shows a infantry officer's sword. I have a eagles head saber. Dodge is likely holding a rifle, but I decided to go with "closely resembling" Mortimer. I have a pair of dragoon bootees which would likely be what Dodge has on. I have some dark blue mounted wool trousers, but they are US Mounted Rifle trousers and I'd need to remove the gold piped black strip on the outer seams. It looks like he has a blue (possible hunting frock?) on under the leather frock. One might assume perhaps a waistcoat, maybe of white or buff wool. White shirt and neck rag I have. The only obvious addition would be a brace of pistols (possibly 1807's). I might want to change the black red leather waist belt to a red/burgundy color. Opinions welcomed!
