I know it's a long shot but does anyone have any information on the rifle pictured in "Col.Henry Dodge, US Mounted Ranger"? This is circa 1832

I'm not sure it is a rifle at least not an American made one - if you look at the various prints it looks to be a double barrel and if so with the two front lugs on the half stock it may be an English double rifle rather than a shotgun which generally have one lug. English rifles were available in St Louis and other points east.

Chuck
examining another of the engravings, it certainly could be a double gun/rifle as you have suggested.....and it appears a flintlock as well...or are you seeing it different than me?

Chuck......what do you think...flint or percussion? Here's a photo Mitch Yates sent me of a gun he built with what I thought was similar lines, although a single barrel rifle....which I may go with............. as a double gun, if I could find someone to build it, would probably be too pricy! Doug I'm not seeing it as a flintlock but rather as a percussion - I don't see a frizzen just a hammer. None of the engravings are clear or big enough for real detail and it may be a rifle and considering, who a well to do Colonel, when 1834 and, where the West, it could be a Hawken or an English sporting rifle. I've been searching more about Dodge himself trying to find any references to his guns, but so far no luck.

Yes...I looked hard and long for historical record and even inquired of a group in Wisconsin who do "Black Hawk war" but never got a response. From shape of stock, I'm not sure a Hawken........but an English rifle is possible....I think the "Bucks County PA halfstock" that Mitch built might be a good start. With so many Hawken rifles out there and based on the shape of the butt stock, I want to guess that it's from further east.......but I'm not the expert on such things as you are and appreciate as always your input! I don't expect to do an exact impression, particularly because of my age.

You should all contact Robert Braun. He has done a TON of research on Dodge and has even portrayed him.
