Here's some prices on horses and gear for the Upper Missouri Outfit, as charged out from the UMO retail store, 1830.
Spanish saddle $4.25 Bridle .56 Rope halter .75 1/2 pr. Saddle blanket 1.00 1 Sursingle .75 1 Pack saddle 3.00 2 Mules 75.00 1 Sorrel mare 36.00 1 Roan 40.00 15 prs. Leather hobbles .50 7.50 1 pr. Spurs 2.00 1 leather halter 1.25
Also, a bit of a mystery: 1 Spanish saddle for packing 3.50 2 " " for riding 8.25
I'm curious about using the spanish saddle for packing---I know you could easily pack a load on a riding saddle, but why the difference? Why not just a notation for 3 riding saddles? Is there a difference in the saddles here, note the price difference--4.12 1/2 for the two riding saddles apiece, 3.50 for the one for packing. Could this be a reference to the aparajo type saddle?

I think I remember seeing this in my UMO Cayuse Handbook - the author thought it was an an aparajo type saddle
