Isaac-
Glad to see others out enjoying the winter. I've never stayed in a tipi but would like to do so at some point. Maybe I'll be able to do that some weekend this summer out at Fort Union. Will your friend be returning again to experience life in the past?

Ah, nothing like a tipi for winter quarters. They can be though when they smoke, you get those tipi eyes and you just can't get low enough. Great place to smoke your hides. Sounds like you gotten some good tips. Just remember you are inside a chimney of sorts. Stay a way from damp wood, and use small wood. Some folks like to try to burn stove size wood. Just doesn't work. The fire should be hot and bright, less smoke. We did one winter camp in -22 f , was a grand time. You guys do the same thing as us, smoke pipes, eat, drink some rum, tell some tales. Gamble hard tack! You'd fit right in.
