Here's the link to a blogpost about a recent winter camp we had. I'll give you a little background information because you will likely read the post and thing "Holy shaven sheep Batman, that's a lot of blankets!" The forcast I had called for colder weather, higher winds, and so I was going to be prepared. I didn't want to not be able to do this. Also my wife said to me "You better not freeze to death." Well, the weather ended up being much milder than what had been forcast. Surprise surprise. We got the nastier weather starting on Sunday. Leifer, Sounds like you had a good time. I believe you got the true gist of our endeavors along this line. Not a direct quote, but..being out with like minded folks who "want you to succeed" is indeed one of the best reasons of all.

Great! It is always great getting out and seeing others getting out and experiencing the history we love. This weekend some mates and I are going to be playing in the history of the western Great Lakes and Prairies fur trade. We will spend some good time on snowshoes, do a little shooting, and spend our nights in the tipi I procured this fall. Temps look to range from lows around -8F and highs of around 18F. Should be a great weekend. I was out on snowshoes yesterday; gathering prairie grass and fir boughs to make our beds in the tipi. Should be cozy!!

You need more pack horses.
We had a Okie grade winter camp a few weeks ago with low temps in the 18 F range and highs in the 40s. My warm bed was on cedar boughs with a half of a buffalo (ephisimore) beneath me and my capot, leggings, blanket hat and wool mittens under a wool blanket with a hemp cloth mantee (also used to carry bedding via tumpline) on top. We had venison backstrap and rice (what was the rice they were trading at Fort Hall?) on Friday and buffalo stew with potato and onion on Saturday. Had a fine contest of shooting at marks on Saturday and I finally finished my red wool gun cover while in camp.

Good reading your blog on your camp. Its always good to see others that are willing to get on the ground and do it. Winter camps are great to learn from. Myself and another one of my messmates are heading into the Utah wilds with a couple of others for a 12 mile snow shoe trek this coming weekend. Can't wait.
