Last night, my old 3M microfilm reader gave up. It wouldn't turn on, I took off the side panel, and went probing with a tester. I determined that I had power going into the machine, through the radio suppressor, and into the machine. I checked what fuses I could see (5 of them) but they all looked OK. I'm suspecting one of the circuit boards (maybe...). Am I overlooking something? I was hoping it was just the power cord, that would be an easy fix, but I'm afraid it's something I can't fix myself. If I can't get it going, I don't want to dump a bunch of money into it---it's a 1984 vintage machine, and probably not worth it. I went searching online for a spare bulb earlier this year, and came up emptyhanded, so parts are an issue. That said, I may be shopping for a new one. I don't need the copy machine feature, and while the motorized reel drive was nice, it's not all that neccesary, either. What I do need, though, is the ability to zoom the lense to focus tightly on some of those hard-to-read words---obviously, for what I do, it's all handwritten, not newsprint or the like. Has anyone had any experience with Indus International out of Wisconsin? I'm looking at this model: www.indususa.com/4601-11/Probably with a lense upgrade---it comes standard with just one magnification. If anyone can give me some idea how to fix the old one on the cheap, or has any ideas for relatively inexpensive readers, let me know. Rod

You might be able to send the film itself off to a company who can transfer them to CD. I used one a few times when I worked at the Seminole Nation Museum, but it finally gave up the ghost.

Wish I could, but it isn't my microfilm---it's from the collections at Ft. Union. I check it out, a reel at a time, and produce a table of contents for each for use out at the fort. I already work slowly, if I had to travel over to the fort to use their reader every time I wanted to work on a reel, I'd never get anything done. Having one at home has really worked out well for me.

Well, I solved the problem---Imaging systems out of Wisconsin had a special on a rebuilt Indus SuperCarrel, with a HP 6P laser printer. I bit the bullet, and bought it---it arrived on Monday, I got everything set up and working yesterday. It's got a 24x24 inch screen, much larger than my old one, and a 18x-42x zoom lense system. Everything I was looking for, plus some more. I'm back in business!!
