I came across an interesting letter while finishing up reel 13 of the Chouteau papers on microfilm last night. In a letter from Ramsay Crooks to Pierre Chouteau Jr, Crooks discusses buying rifles. Crooks was on a buying trip back East in late fall/early winter 1827, and stopped in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to look over rifles. He wrote that he ordered 60 rifles from Jacob Gumph---30 are to be "plain" at $11, while 30 are to be "ornamented" at $13. Barrels are 3 feet 7 inches to 3 feet 8 inches, and carry 40 to 45 balls to the lb. Crooks noted that Gumph was also the supplier for Menard & Vallé. The rifles he was sending to Menard & Vallé cost $10 and $12 dollars respectively, but the ones for the AFC were to have superior mountings and be boxed more securely.
An interesting look at what would have been available in St. Louis from a couple of major fur trade companies in the late 1820s.

What I find interesting about this letter is they are basically supplying 50 caliber rifles and by that time they well knew what they were gonna run into out West - grizzly, buffalo etc and evidently they found a 50 caliber rifle totally adequate
