This is actually an archaeology website that has quite a number of interesting articles, but I'm putting them under a couple of different topic headings.

Although seen less in the mountains, the fort based fur trade had no end of glass bottles. Ft. Union, for instance, excavated a tremendous amount of patent medicine bottles. I carry a repro Turlington's Balsom bottle in my shooting bag with my gun oil in it---it was a common enough bottle at the time.
