Don't know how many others have had to track down appropriate eyewear for the time period, but I'm in that boat. My eyesight is simply too bad to not have either my glasses or contacts. I usually switch into contacts while attending a camp or event, but that will only work for a couple of days...as long as I have eyedrops. Anyone have a trusted source for period eyewear? I'm thinking 1820-1840.

Jas Townsend sells a good reproduction pair of 1830's sliding temple glasses. jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?cPath=46&products_id=760I attached a portrait from the 1830's of a gentleman wearing a pair of sliding temple glasses. The sides were straight at that time with no bends for the ears like modern glasses. They should have a small tear-drop loop on the back of the temple. They are narrower and pinch onto your face, but can be adjusted forward or back. I bought an original pair from Eyeglasses Warehouse. www.eyeglasseswarehouse.com/pages/19c-slidingtemple.htmlThe tricky part is finding someone who can put your prescription lenses in a frame that small. Beaver Hunter, I've got an original pair exactly like yours, but with silver frames. Bought them a number of years ago at a gun show. My eye care provider had no problems fitting lenses in them. When looking for glasses, look at how the frames clamp around the lense---some old ones are riveted, and thus really not workable. They need to have screws so the old lenses can be taken out and new ones fitted easily.

As always gentlemen, thanks for the responses and info. And thanks for the link to eyeglasses warehouse. It's nice to have access to eyeglasses actually from the period!

I can not say for 1820-40s but I have a pair for 18th century - early 19th that I really like. I normally cheat and wear contacts but when I choose to use glasses, I got a pair of the cheap sunglasses that WIlliamsburg sells. I got mine from Avalon forge for something like $12. I then took off the nose pads and had my prescription added. These are pretty darn good, especially at the price.
