Anyone have an idea what the largest cal./guage, one can get in a 7/8 breeech barrel? thanks.

Greg,
The largest caliber that I've seen commonly in 7/8ths has been 50. This is pretty thin walled and a sturdy breech system (for both cap lock and flint) is what I would recommend if considering its use. Plan also low depth dovetails for sight installs etc.
