So, what would a "Trade Horn" look like. I presume cow horn, but would it be a simple horn with a flat but plug? Would there be factory made PA types with turned base, screw tips, etc. There are many horns on trade lists from trading posts and rondezvous traders. Miller shows buffalo horns, were these a trade item or field made?

The 1822 American Fur Co. list of goods on hand at St. Louis lists "White Powder Horns". I'd guess these were plain cow horns, but there's no description of what they actually looked like other than the color.

Thank you Rod, OK, just to keep this going just a bit. Miller shows primarily Buffalo horns. I believe they are way over represented. I have had one for 30 years. I made it, I love it. But now starting to accumulate a couple of proper rifles/guns to this peroid, and want to match the right horns to the rifle/gun.
I'm thinking horns ran the gamut, excluding F&I or AWI period horns.
I asked this question on another board and Chuck posted the info below: 1832 Robert Campbell - for horns and awls - John Gray July 17th to 1 powderhorn $5.00 (retail sale) - Narcissa Provo July 17th to 1 powderhorn $5.00 (retail sale) - Robert Newel July 17th to 1 powderhorn $5.00 (retail sale) - 1 powder horn to Antoine Goodin (aka Godin) July 12 $5.00 - 6 powderhorns - Bought of Hornmaker 5 common horns 1 for self-fine So, What was the Horn maker producing? What did common "trade" horns look like? Vs a fine "trade" horn. Was the fine horn similar to the Clark inlaid Buff horn? I have read somewhere that there were "factories" producing horns back east for the "trade". Were these small back room shops where a few artisans were producing a couple of horns a week? Or a building dedicated to horn production where 25 guys were pumping out a dozen or so a day. All the books I see are dedicated to the fancy ingraved horns. There's gotta be a study/book/s somewhere, I just can't find it. And it's funny that I got more responses over there on that board vs on "OUR" board. Thanks again, Chuck for this forum.
Cheers, Doug
