Duane as for making horns IMO get Scott Sibley's book on making horns www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976579707?ie=UTF8&tag=batrll-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0976579707. Size wise I like them to finish out at 12-17" As for a buckle what time period? For western fur trade an iron or brass roller buckle is appropriate as are either brass or iron square or rectangular single or double/center bar buckles. English stirrup buckles are also appropriate at least for the mid 1830's and later - this is the type buckle Antoine is shown wearing in an A. J. Miller print - I have some of these and would be glad to send you one. Belts widths should be 1-2" max and the big forged iron buckles so often seen are not really period. There are a couple of good articles via the AMM Manuel Lisa Outfit on buckles and on belts/sashes www.manuellisaparty.com/articles.htmGene mentions the Double D buckles as being appropriate but I haven't seen any real solid documentation on them for the post 1815 period, except in the Spanish territories.
