Although the black silk handkerchief was very common throughout the fur trade, the cotton handkerchief--often resist dyed-- is frequently found on trade lists as well. 6 2/3 pieces Romal hdkfs [Astoria sale inventory] 1 Blue Bandana Handkerchief [Robert Campbell account book, sold to George Holmes, June 28, 1832---as an aside, this is the same George Holmes that was bitten by a rabid wolf at the rendezvous, and later went mad. See Larpenteur, Forty Years] Handkerchiefs, bandana Handkerchiefs, blue romal Handkerchiefs, blue bandana Handkerchiefs, crimson or scarlet ground Handkerchiefs, Madrass cotton for neck Handkerchiefs, Turkey red for neck [above from Ft. Union inventories, 1832-34] Whilst reading Nathan Kobuck's blog, he notes that Burnley & Trowbridge are currently reproducing resist-dyed cotton handkerchiefs. buffalotrace1765.blogspot.com/www.burnleyandtrowbridge.com/Well, I couldn't resist (I can hear the groans now! I never could resist a good pun--there, did it again!), so I bought both a red and a blue handkerchiefs. They arrived a couple of days ago, and I'm impressed. Nicely woven material, and nice resist-dyed patterns. Roughly a yard square, so they're good sized for a neck cloth, and the hems are hand-finished--no machine stitching here. Well worth the money, in my opinion. Now I can be right in style at rendezvous--just ask George Holmes! Rod

I just received 4 different ones last week. A red spotted and three prints...they are great. the weight and weave are very good and the prints are dead on. I love them!
