Cool! I know a couple old-timers that wear similar caps at reenactment but have never seen much like it historically. This, as well as what their's are likely based on, appear to be mid-19th century. A VERY cool hat. I love non NDN types of things made of smoked hide and adorned with bead or quill. Someday when I have too much time and hide on my hands , I would like to make a "modern" vest that is hide with quillwork. I wear vests a lot with button up shirt and tie here at work. A vest like that would be historical fun.

Just did some looking around and it appears that smoking cap is from the Manitoba Museum.

Howdy Ike - yep sounds right the Manitoba site.
Note that it appears to be silk thread embroidery? not the first I've seen ( got pics of some coats so embellished, inclduing teh one Pre recenlty posted here) but a unique piece.
and yep I've been part of the "neo-tribal" movement on and off for beaucoup years and love the mix of the best of th4 old and best of the new - I just don't mix it with originally documented times and places, but enjoy the heck out of working in the genre.... A long time ago I asked an NDN lady (Hunkpapa) if I could copy one of her patterns and she said sure bu then asked Why?because her work came from her heart - That really made me re-think my work........
