What was the average size of the lock plate of JJ Henry trade rifles?
I am curious - because I remember talking to Ron Paul back in the day - late 80s early 90s in Spokane when he was making the JJ Henry English Pattern guns - and he had a special run of casting for the lock parts and plate - because evidently the lock was larger and differently shaped than was commercially available?

The Old English Models used a 6" long plate generally although IIRC their was an order that specified 5" plates, but that may be on the post 1834 New Model English.
The American pattern generally used a 5" plate based on orders, but there are lots of variation. Henry at times would use about anything he could get his hands on per letters to the AFCo. Larry at the JJ Henry Artificers uses the late model Ketland as a start IIRc and that's one of the best and most appropriate locks for the early American model trade rifles (remember Henry did not produce the American modesl for the western trade until 1825 and later - after 1830 his were the most common). In 1815 though Henry did avertise that they could supply locks of all types including waterproof pan types. For a lefty gun I'd have Bob Roller build one on the L & R Manton or Late English Plate or maybe the Mike Rowe late English Model (don't remember the name and IIRc Davis has the rights now)- cost is about double a regular produced lock but you will get the best of the best. Bob's been hangin out recently on the ALR board so you can contact him there if interested.
