A favorite of mine, too. The gent's name is François Gros Louis, and there is a series of photos of him, taken in the later 1800s. That print has been altered a bit---the original glass plate had a crack in it which has been removed in that image. Nice photo, really captures the image of the old trapper/voyageur type.

Fat Louie appears to have lost some weight over the years. ;D Great picture. The lines in his face look like a trail map for his life. Reminds me of a lot of wrinkled old Navajo and Apache women that I've met over the years. Time, exposure, and experience shapes their faces.
