Does anyone have information on which companies were supplying percussion caps to the western fur trade in the late 1830's and early 1840's?
Any pictures on what these old cap containers looked like would be great!
Was Eley of London a supplier during this time?

The best I could recommend is going to the Mus. of the Fur Trade site. They might have photos online.

Mountaineer, The closest thing I've found looking for the same thing comes from a quote from "Gunsmoke and saddle leather: firearms in the nineteenth-century American West" by Charles G. Worman (Google Books) stating: "In 1838 Adolphus Meir & Company of St. Louis was advertising "1 000 000 S&B [percussion] caps in small boxes"."From what I find "S&B" probably equals Sellier & Bellot, a Czech ammo producer still in business. According to their website: "Louis Sellier, a French merchant, received the privilege to manufacture percussion caps for infantry firearms in its newly founded factory in Prague from Franz I., the Emperor of Austria. Shortly afterwards he invited his countryman, Jean Maria Nicolaus Bellot, to join the company. Under his leadership the manufacture quickly gained momentum and Sellier & Bellot products soon established themselves on both European and overseas markets. As early as 1830 the manufacture of percussion caps was in excess of 60 million and peaked later in 1837 by enormous quantity 156 millions caps." I havent found any dated container/box/tin so far but I have attached (if it worked) an undated example of a S.B. box from www.worthpoint.com. /Char

I just found this photo on another forum. It is an original cap tin. Hopefully it will be of some interest/help to you. I do not know how to post photos, so I made it an attachment. Mark Attachments:

Thank you Char and Mark for the great info! I am trying to find a period correct way of carrying caps. I thought an original or reproduction percussion cap tin would be neat to have in my bag.
