I'm guessing about 3 yards, depending on width---at least that's what I ordered for mine, and had some left over. By the way, you can find very correct wool flannel at the website below, and it costs less. Click on the listings for wool, then click on flannel--several reds to choose from. wmboothdraper.com/Rod

For the basic pattern I used Kannik's Korners "Man's Shirt 1790 – 1830 Pattern." It is really about the small details for a period correct shirt; the collar width, cuffs, button placement. The basic shirt pattern of squares and rectangles stayed the same for a long time, but those small details changed each decade. I highly recommend: Thoughts on Men's Shirts 1750 – 1900, William L. Brown III Here are a few shirts I made using the pattern and book. They are completely hand sewn, inside and out. A cotton check shirt. These two shirts have sleeve reinforcements sewn on the inside. Here is my newest red wool flannel shirt. This one has a reinforced front slit and buttons around the neck, like the cotton ones. Attachments:

You can buy ready made wool flannel shirts from Mark and Charlotte Morain, Kootenai River Traders, for $60-80. Excellent shirts. I recommend them. 406-293-8239, mmorain@frontiernet.net

One of those 'slap on forehead' moments, I forgot about Mark & Charlotte----I've got a couple of their checked shirts, I'd recommend them, also.

I'll second the mention of Mark and Charlotte for finished clothing. The do fine work.
