I'm definitely no Wick Ellerbe, but here is my recent whack at a circa 1800-1820 English scalper. I made it from a hunk of commercial bandsaw blade I had in the shop, likely 15N20. The handle is cocobolo made from a pen turning blank and shaped into a hexagon as per originals. Wick hafts a lot of his in box wood which is definitely PC, but there are also several trade list that refer to coco handled scalpers or red handled scalpers. Cocobolo is also a heck of a lot easier to get than box wood. The blade is about 7.5" long and fairly flexible, although not as much as a fillet knife. It'll shave hair and my initial playing around suggest the hardness is in the zone. I shaped this one like originals with a distal taper to both the point and the tang and pinned the haft in place with finish nails. Overall, I pretty happy with it at this point. I was finishing up sharpening it this morning at the breakfast table this morning with my daughter. Note the PC maple syrup container and Dora the Explorer table mat in the top edges of the photos. ;D Sean

Looks good! Now you need to crank out about 100 dozen or so, just like on the various trade lists Rod
