These show up on trade lists frequently but I have yet to see either a drawing or an image of one - maybe MOFT??? Anyone got such a picture or a more in depth description please post them..

While I've seen them in the trade lists, I cannot recall seeing an example.

I suspected that I had one...its a commercial made blade with a stamp of "502" (if I recall correctly) in the middle of the blade. The numbers were in an old fashioned style....and the blade is a common butcher blade...the handle is however antler crown. Old antler crown..very old...with a pewter bolster. The antler is cracked from the inside out, like it lay in the water or in a muddy bank and then froze, swelling from the inside and cracking.
I got it along the Mississippi river from a local fellow...very close to the Rock River and in the local of many native camps that relocated to the west bank in the 1820s and 1830s...
If you all think, or maybe even know if any trade blades did in fact get stamped with a number instead of a makers mark...I will be happy to dig out the blade and rephotograph it...and forward those images to Sean or Chuck to post here... TC

TC,
I'd be happy to post it for you. You can e-mail it to me, but this is one of the few boards out there that actually allows you to post pics without a photobucket account. It'll take pictures up to about 1 mb in size.

Alright, Sean, tell us how to do that---using photobucket is a major pain for me. Do we just link on a photo on our computers? Walk me through it, please---and bear in mind my complete and utter lack of tech savvy.

When you post a message on this board, the second thing down under subject is attachment. Next to that is a little gray button labeled 'choose file'. There's a limit on the file sizes of 1024 kb, so will likely have to resize the file to get it small enough. You can do in any of the standard photo software packages, just make sure you save it under a different file size so all your pictures don't end up tiny.

It actually uploads the file from your hard drive to the board.
