I hesitate to post these, in light of the fine blades on this forum, but here goes. These are some cartouche knives that I've come up with. Now, right off--I did not forge these out. I'm no bladesmith, and a pretty poor blacksmith. What these are, however, is an experiment to see what I could do with some commercial knives. I was looking through the Crazy Crow catalog, and came across their table knives, and thought that if they had pointed blades, they might make passable cartouche knives. The integral bolster and pinned bone scales, in particular, looked like it would work. So, I ordered four of them, and went to grinding. Judging from the sparks, there's some pretty good carbon content to the blades (I was very careful not to overheat), but I can't say how well they're hardened. The spine was soft enough to file without too much trouble, the edge seemed harder. I ended up making the box, too----couldn't find anything in plain pasteboard in the right size, and the label is a copy of an original Wm. Greaves & Sons, from 1830. Rod

For some reason, I can't get this to post in any other size from photobucket--tried uploading in a couple of different sizes, but they post in the same postage stamp size...sorry, but computers are not my area of expertise.

Rod - try emailing the larger image to me at chuck@wrtcleather.com and I;ll see if I can't get it to post.
BTW - have you looked into using Hughesnet for your internet? - not real cheap, but when compared to dialup it't wonderful. Like you I can't currently get any other form of hi-speed so go this - I'd rate it over all about 7 ot of 10.

Chuck, I sent you an email with the pic about a week ago--evidentally didn't go through? I will try again. Thanks for the help, this computer defeats me every time. Hughsnet or Bluesky is rather tempting--I spent the better part of an hour last night to post a single--and tiny--image.

Rod, I have Bluesky, it is pretty expensive, but that is better than having a heart attack over getting so pissed at these things...

Rod Howdy Rod - Your email got caught up in one of my email filters and only half the pic came through so please try it again - You are now on the friends list and it should come through. Another option for internet is via a cell phone provider - if you can get Cell Phone reception in your area, most like Verizon or ATT also offer internet and it's usually a bit cheaper than satellite and often faster with out the satellite delay to,e. About two years ago I had to hook backup to dial-up when we had troubles with the satellite for a week and man did it suck big time...... and yep having to stick your arm up the inside of a cow to turn a calf is less troublesome than this consarned machines at times - even if it is 3:00AM and the wind is blowing at 20-30mph with the temp hovering around 0° and your up to your backside in half froze mud - been there done that more than once too!

Rod,
When did you get those from CC? They are not on their online catalog. I've been thinking about doing a cartouche knife lately. I was pretty enamored with that original one with the bone scales Ken Hamilton posted over on the FF board a while back.

Yeah, they're pretty inexpensive----made in India, like I said, the blades probably aren't too hard, although they sparked like they've got some carbon to them. I'll probably make simple rawhide sheaths for these, and my kids can use them when out camping. If they lose one, I won't be too upset.
