I built a southern mountain rifle with iron mounts last yaer .54 cal. flinter with a pewter chevron end cap and a pretty nice peice of curly maple .I made all the metal parts but the lock and barrel on my forge and the stock was from a blank. My first and it took me a while as I was nurturing a injury just then .I want to build a .62 cal. smoothbore flinter sort of on the Virginia school with a swamped barrel ,a smoothbore seems pretty versitile to me .I have a .36 Hatfeild mountain rifle that I love but Im afraid my old eyes aint gona let me shoot at too many squirrels with it lest they show theirselves up on a limb I sort of loose focus of them on the ground if its too dark.My boy has a Hawkins with a birdseye stock .50 cal. and my wife has a pecussion doublebarrel 12 Ga.

My favorites are still my Hawken and Leman style rifles in .50, .52, .54, and .58 calibers. And right now my .54 Leman is my real favorite. It's too good to leave at home. Shoot sharp, Mike

I think my next rifle will be a J.Henry English rifle, but I sure like the late Lancaster that I have now.It has a 44'' swamped Rice barrel and the balance is excellent.

What was the nominal caliber of most of the period 1807-1840 trade rifles?

32 and 40 to the pound were some of the most commonly order trade rifle calibers per the documented orders - that in modern parlance is .54 and .50 caliber respectively

This spring I finished a 32 balls to the pound Deringer interpretation. It has a 44 inch Colerain barrel with a simple trigger. For reason not analyzed I seem to be shooting better. I like it and it seems to like me. Guess I will keep it.
