Another good point, Rod. I looked through a bunch of other Rendisbacher images and most all of his with leggings (including leather) have garters. This guy doesn't. There are also a few images of the Half-caste and wife that shows fringed "leggings" without garters... ? IW

To continue this talk (been awhile), this summer I was rereading Five Fur Traders by Gates and in (IIRC) McLeod's journal, he mentions one of his men making him a pair of deerskin trousers. If he DID mean trousers and not breeches (this was 1800), this is cool. Also, were these looser trousers or tighter "pantaloons"... with or without fringe. Hmmm

Man, it's been forever since I read Five Fur Traders----now I'm going to have to go look that up. As if I didn't have enough of a backlog of reading to do Rod

I should seriously just look it back up and post the quote. IW

Howdy Isaac - You might check this site out as well www.northwestjournal.ca/It's centered on the Old Northwest and the HBC/NW Comopany - htere are two articles on clothes there. Also here's a pic of a pair of Metis drop front trousers circa 1850, which appear similar to those worn by the guy in the middel and the one on the far right in this Rindisbacher pic - which you also posted above: One difference between the earlier and later trousers would be in the waistband - early wold IMO be narrow fall with the wide fall coming in to fashion in the late 1830's. The other two main figures I believe are wearing much mor form fitted and are probably pantaloons without the foot strap. FWIW - I wore a pair of pantaloons with the strap at one time and for me that strap was a pain - vrap kept getting under the strap and also I had to pull on the pants over wet or dirty mocs which left the inside of the pants all crudded up. SO for ma anyway they didn't work. Your blog posting looks good and like so many studying this earlier period (1800-1822) there is a dearth of materials on certain subjects plus the terms for clothes appear to be in flux - pantaloons became pants even thought they don't look alike and when we see the term breeches used are they knee breeches or more a generic term for some type of pants -and later britches for pants - i.e. albeit from a later period Osborne Russell describes his clothes as being breeches in one paragraph and a couple later he mentions trousers - so was he wearing knee breeches or a type of longer nether wear

Good stuff Chuck! Where are those trousers (1850 Metis ones) from? Anything you know of them and their construction?

Looks to me like you've thought it out pretty well, and make a persuasive arguement. I do agree that these seem to be more common for men ahorse than otherwise----not very good canoe wear, for instance. As for tailoring??? Your guess is as good as mine as to whether they followed ordinary pantaloons patterns, or were cut like leather breeches. I'd guess Alex Henry's seams were poorly placed Rod
