This is in regards to the pair of red ocher stained leggings you posted in the Whatcha Working on Thread. Thought this pair might give you some ideas for further decoration, although I don't totally agree his interpretation of the symbology of the decoration - here in the west, the meaning of symbology is more often than not a very personal one.... These are from the book "Buckskin and Buffalo" by Dr. Colin F. Taylor. The blue green color of the quills might be one of three sourcess: 1) Blue-green clay 2) Copper bearing soil 3) Boiled out of wool - I've boiled up indigo dyed blue stroud and got a similar color re: Dr. Taylor - any of his books are great resources for those interested in western NDN gear. While much of the work illustrated/discussed is post 1859, his books are some of the best sources for early 1820-1850 western NDN gear, especially since the photos are often in color. Another excellent source is the Allen Chronister article on pre-1850 beadwork in the Book of Buckskinning vol 7 whihc includes a good list of resources - only downer is that the images are in B & W...... Anyway I look forward to seeing your leggings when done.........

Thanks for that image. I have not seen this pair and I have been looking at a lot of different leggings from all over up and down the Miss as well as further west. Also have been looking at some different paintings that show leggings pretty good. Ideas are brewing!!!
Thanks again,
Isaac

Here is what I finished with this summer. I do not have an image of them worn yet, although they look different and cooler when worn (I wear them with the quill more to the front... sorta and the tops twisted more to the side).

Isaac would they have had all the toes and dew claws on them? I like the looks but wouldn't they be a little noisy?

Atrain I have seen some leggings with a lot of "Noisy" things on them including brass and tin tinkler cones. I guess it depends on your needs, where you are wearing them, and why. Most of the time, you really do not need to be quite.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone remembers a pair of green wool center seamed leggings. Seems like they were from the GL area.
Thanks in advance.

Hey Pare... don't think I have chatted with you since the days of Well's "Red Threads" board.
I do not know of any green centerseams but there are a pair of side seams in Russia that are green.

Yeah, that was quite awhile back. The last I checked, Fitz posted on there about a year ago.
Seems to me that either Doug Rodgers or Michael Galban sent that picture to me, but my pc crashed since then.
Great job on the leggings! Btw, is your wife still knitting caps? Someone asked where to get one awhile back and I mentioned your name.
