Every now and then I get a flyer in the mail from a small book seller. Mostly western type books. The latest flyer had some books I may be interested in, but I don't want to waste the money if they are no good. Maybe some of you have read them or know about them.
A NewerWorld by David Roberts
The Adventures of Captain Bonneville In The Rocky Mountains and the Far West by Washington Irving
Jim Bridger by J Cecil Alter

Bonneville's Adventures is a must-read. Alter's Jim Bridger is ok, but it's getting pretty dated---it's about time some one did an updated bio of Bridger.
I don't know about the other two.

Interesting that you bring up Washington Irving's book on Bonneville. We were talking about just that at the rondy this weekend. Worth the read. Steve

Sorry, I guess you only listed three books---don't know why I added one that wasn't there. Higher mathematics was never my strong suit Rod

Thanks- I think I will order the Bonneville book. Mostly my meager library is Texas history type books but it is time to expand.

Bonneville's Adventures is good, although Irving villifies Walker pretty badly, and with no real cause other thant to have a villian for his book.
if you've never read it, try Journal of a Trapper by Osborne Russell; it journals Russell's experiences as a Rocky Mountain trapper.
Also you may want to check out Narrative Press, they carry a lot of first person narrative books on lots of subjects; Big game hunting, the South Sea Trades, the New England Whalers and the Mountain Men. good stuff!
