Found this place a few days ago, thought I would take a chance. I did a good bit of muzzleloading back in the '70's to early '80's. TC Hawkens, Renegades,GRRW Lehman, etc. Over the years I circulated thru other venues 1911's, AR's, Sharpses, Cowboy shooting and what not. I live on a place big enough to grab a gun and go hunt or shoot without bothering anybody. I currently have a full stock Hawken flint gun (that was a mistake) and have a NSW chiefs gun on order. Been trying to accumulate plunder for it. I may not really be a mountain man type but more of a Texian but hopefily I won't get harumphed too bad if I ask a dumb question or two.

Cherokee, Howdy-Do
Welcome to the forum. I think you will like the people here.
I have a friend that is into the cowboy shoots and that is probably where I would have gone if I had not found Rendezvous and black powder. I have one this weekend in fact.
Sounds like your place is big enough to have your own "voo" and shoot.

Cherokee, Welcome to this doin's. And let me start some conversation by asking what might be a dumb question, why was that full-stock flint Hawken a mistake? I sure like mine. By the way, I really like my NSW Chief's Gun too. Shoot sharp, Mike

Mike- When I bought the Hawken I kinda forgot that I wasn't 20 or 30 anymore. Darn thing is heavy, I will need to find a forked tree or a stump to shoot it from. It also has a patent breech that worries me as to how to clean it. But I will shoot it after we get a couple cold fronts down here and most likely try to hunt some deer with it. By the way it's a .50 cal with a 1x 36" barrel. Got it from Track don't really know who made it. The barrel has MRH on it. Fit and finish is nothing to be sneezed at.

Cherokee,
You know what they say about dumb questions?... The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. We're not much for harrumphing around here. Its a good group of guys and most of them don't bite. Welcome and where are you in Tejas?

Cherokee, Don't let a patent breech slow you down. To clean it, if you can't flush the bore and breech with water, plug the flash-hole (I use a round toothpick) and let the gun stand for a couple of minutes with water in the bore. Then dump it out and continue cleaning. The air passing through the breech and the flash-hole will do enough to dry those areas. Then, if you feel that you need to, you can fit your ramrod with a smaller jag, one that will fit inside the breech, to wipe that area with some lube. Just be ready with a worm to retreive the patch. Shoot sharp, Mike

Iche/Sean- I still do the Cowboy thing once or twice a year to get it out of my system. I'm in Blanco Co. and as far as I can tell it is a total vacuum as far as muzzle loading goes. Mostly my place is a big rockpile with a lot of cedars. I do have a nice creek, when it runs, with cypress, black walnut, grape vines etc. Mostly my gear is a conglomeration, I buy what I like and don't worry too much about about PC/HC. It's a mix of Eastern,French,Mexican, Indian and cowboy. I usually carry a Colt's .36 calibre belt model when using a flintlock long gun. Also like to sit in the shade or by the fire depending on the weather and pull on a jug or a can and tell and listen to wild and unbelievable stories. Also I consider myself well versed on cooking in a dutch oven. Well thats about all I amount to.

I'm a fur-piece north and west of you on the Llano Estacado or what used to be the buffalo plains in Lubbock. Alas, 'tis now mostly cotton. Not nearly as much fun to chase on a caballo.
