So we have our snuff boxes, tobacco boxes, hinged lid tobacco boxes, and let's not forget the fancy japanned types with the burning lenses... Seems like if you purchase any of the repros today there's a warning label in them talking about how if you're going to put food or tobacco in these containers that you should keep them in a plastic bag. Now, obviously if you're using these items for things such a fire kits, fishing kits, grease and patches, you're really not too concerned with this. Anyone use these tobacco boxes for...tobacco? Do you just put the tobacco in there and dash the consequences? Anyone only keep tobacco in them for the duration of a camp and then remove them? What about the folks from the 1800s? Curious on what anyone's experiences and thoughts are on this. Leifer www.dixiegunworks.com/images/MA4040.JPG [/img]

I haven't heard of any warning on any brass containers. I keep my tobacco in a buckskin pouch. I wonder if a google search would show something on the subject?
I've thought about getting an original snuff box to either use for tobacco or for percussion caps, but I didn't buy it.
Those may be interesting topics: Originals items and Snuff boxes.

I should have snapped a picture of the warning label from my hinged tobacco box. Here's a picture of the one from the lid of a repro snuff box that I'm using for grease and patches. It doesn't quite have the same warning as what was in the hinged lid tobbacco box. Leifer Attachments:

How many of these tobacco tins, etc. were actually brass in the day and how many were stee/iron/tin? From MOST (not all) historic examples I have seen for tobacco tins, they have have been not been brass or copper.
