Working the hide by hand while answering questions to visitors at Fort Union during the Rendezvous on June 16th. Rod had been doing the demo on a moose hide and I got to hop in later and work on my whitetail hide under Rod's tutelage. Attachments:

Badger stopped by to check out the progress before he did his talk on the Metis. I was finally able to sit in on the whole thing. I had plenty of space by myself sitting in the back of the clerks office while he talked...no one wanted to sit too close to the "smelly" guy...it was only brains.... The little tike I'm holding is my son Garrick. Worked the hide until it was dry. There were a few places that dried quicker, and as a result are a little stiff compared to the rest of the hide. Now I just need to smoke it and it's done. First thing I'm going to use it for is to make the strap for my powder horn. Leifer Attachments:

I'm glad to see it worked out---too bad I had to leave early, and didn't get to see it done. I missed Badger's presentation, as well.
I got the moose about half smoked, I'll bring it back out for the Labor Day Living History weekend and finish it up.

Was able to finish it up. I used the chimney from our chimenia to build the fire in. The city get's kinda cranky with "open fires". It worked out well enough though. Here's smoking the hide. Attachments:

Here's the finished smoked hide. It's a little darker than what it looks like in this picture. Attachments:

I've smoked leather using a hot-plate, sawdust and an aluminum pie pan. One can adjust the temperature so the sawdust just smokes/smolders.
I built an enclosure from plastic sheeting, thin strips of wood and hot glue to contain the smoke. I suspect it would be easy enough to omit the enclosure and still get the hide smoked.
