So, ever since I've met Rod, I've found myself pouring over books, researching and attempting to make gear and so forth. Then I have another conversation with the guy and I find myself trying something else. He's down right infectious... Anyway, I'm working on last year's deer hide in my first ever attempt at braintanning. Here's the progress thus far... quick scraper I put together Attachments:

So I'm infectious, eh? Sort of like smallpox or the flu? Or is it something a shot of penicillin will cure?
The hide looks good, you've got a good start on it. Be prepared for deer hair on everything! Lots of work, but it's worth it in the end.

Thanks for pics..I've been wanting to try dry scrape.... Nice scraper... A question if I may; I'm assuming the hide was frozen, did you do any kind of re-hydration or just frame it and scrape? Thanks

Correct Randy. I put the frozen hide into a large rubbermaid style garbage can and filled it with water until it was completely covered. I then weighed the hide down with a heavey filled bucket to keep it submerged overnight. The next day I removed the wet, thawed out hide and laced it into the stretcher. As per Rod's suggestion I made (roughly) 1 inch long slits every 3 inches around the edge of the hide to lace it in.

Thanks, I have always fleshed and haired over a beam. But I soak in homebrew lye(hardwood ashes) for a couple of days, beam it, then rinse and soak in vinegar solution to neutralize, tan, THEN frame it..... Scraping in the frame looks like it would save a lot of time.... And the older I get, that time seems more precious..... Thanks and carry on...watching intently here...

Looking good. It has been about 12 years since I did a deer for leather. I plan on saving hides and dong a few this year...I need a pair of pantaloons, REAL bad!

Finally got the scraping done and the hide cut out. So here's the rawhide. I broke through in several places, so that's why it's not exactly...deer shaped... Now to do the brain tanning part. Attachments:
